چکیده

Abstract California is one of the nation’s top agriculture producers and vulnerable to extreme events such as droughts heat waves. Concurrent may further stress water energy resources, exerting greater adverse socioeconomic, environmental, health impacts than individual events. Here we examine features compound drought, wave, dust in during spring summer. From 2003 2020, 16 are found warm seasons, with a mean duration ∼4 days. Compound characterized by enhanced surface temperature up 4.5°C over northern western California, reduced soil moisture vegetation density, an increase optical depth (DOD) 0.05–0.1 central southern California. The DOD largely associated severe dieback that favors emissions southeasterly wind anomalies support northward transport from source regions Surface fine PM 2.5 concentrations also more 0.5 5 μ g m −3 , respectively, both relatively stable atmosphere traps pollutants. development related anomalous high west coast lower middle troposphere, which pattern favoring sinking motion dry conditions embedded wave train develops 7 days before In comparison extremes alone, show significantly higher density droughts.

Dust Bowl 3 Drought and dust storms

A farmer and his two sons during a dust storm in Cimarron County, Oklahoma, 1936, Photo: Arthur Rothstein The Dust Bowl, or the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms causing major ecological and agricultural damage to American and Canadian prairie lands in the 1930s, particularly in 1934 and 1936. The phenomenon was caused by severe drought coupled with decades of extensive farming...

Contrasting drought-response strategies in California redwoods.

We compared the physiology and growth of seedlings originating from different Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don.) Endl. (coast redwood) and Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) Buchh. (giant sequoia) populations subjected to progressive drought followed by a recovery period in a controlled greenhouse experiment. Our objective was to examine how multiple plant traits interact to influence the response o...

Analysis of events of dust using satellite monitoring and synoptic analysis in southwest Iran

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Dust storms are a kind of severe natural disaster indust source regions, which have a negative impact on human health, industrial products and activities. Iran is a dry  and low water country, the coincidence of this situation and its position in the global rebound belt has brought about very bad conditions. Repeaters in recent years have been affected by the...

Canopy and physiological controls of GPP during drought and heat wave

Vegetation indices (VIs) derived from satellite reflectance measurements are often used as proxies of canopy activity to evaluate the impacts of drought and heat wave on gross primary production (GPP) through production efficiency models. However, GPP is also regulated by physiological processes that cannot be directly detected using reflectance measurements. This study analyzes the co-limitati...

A low-level jet in eastern Iran: a possible factor in dust events in the region

One of the world's major mineral dust source regions lies along the border between Iran and Afghanistan. In this studyit is hypothesized that a low-level jet may play in role in generating the intensity of this source region. The presence of alow-level jet east of the Seistan mountains is documented here for the first time. The jet exists mainly from May toSeptember and has a core at 850 mb. Ma...
